Description

HIGH PRIORITY PROJECT

Sebastiano Ceccarini, a painter from the Marche region, significantly contributed to Italian art, showing physical and emotional depth. In the left nave of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, Ceccarini’s painting The Vision of St. Leo the Great glorifies St. Leo the Great (440-461), a key figure in the Church. This artwork illustrates the saint’s spiritual grandeur and significant civic deeds. Known for his theological contributions and leadership during the Council of Chalcedon, St. Leo the Great is depicted in a divine vision. The painting emphasizes his role as a Doctor of the Church and defender of Christological orthodoxy, highlighting his profound spiritual insights and miraculous intercessions. The painting shows, with ethereal quality, the saint surrounded by heavenly light and angelic figures. The dynamic interplay of light and shadow, vibrant colors, and expressive brushwork reflect Ceccarini’s mastery.

Total Cost: € 9.315,00 ($ 9,581.41)

State of Preservation

The surface shows alterations due to oxidized paint and atmospheric deposits. Numerous stuccoes and overpaintings cover the original colors. Seepage and water runoff have caused localized problems with cohesion and adhesion of the pictorial layers.

Restoration Procedures

  • Removal of surface deposits and altered protective layers using mechanical and chemical methods
  • Review of the relining
  • Pre-consolidation and consolidation of detached portions
  • Cleaning tests and surface cleaning
  • Filling gaps with plaster and adhesive
  • Pictorial reintegration with reversible colors and recognizable techniques (watercolor or varnish)
  • Frame review and tension adjustment
