Blessed Nicola Albergati, born in 1373 in Bologna, Italy, was an important figure in the Catholic Church during the 15th century. He joined the Carthusian Order in 1394, dedicating his life to contemplation, prayer, and service to the Church. Albergati’s deep spirituality and commitment to ecclesiastical reform quickly gained him recognition, leading to his appointment as Bishop of Bologna in 1417. He played a crucial role in reforming the religious life in Bologna, emphasizing discipline, education, and the clergy’s moral conduct. His influence extended beyond his diocese; he was a trusted diplomat and advisor to several popes. His diplomatic skills were particularly evident during the Council of Constance (1414–1418), where he played a pivotal role in resolving the Western Schism, a period of division within the Catholic Church. In recognition of his holiness and contributions to the Church, Pope Benedict XIV beatified Nicola Albergati in 1744. The portrait of Blessed Nicola Albergati by Stefano Pozzi, a prominent colorist painter from the 18th century, captures not only his physical likeness but also the spiritual depth and solemnity that characterized his life.
The surface shows alterations due to oxidized varnishes and atmospheric deposits. Water infiltration and runoff have caused localized cohesion and adhesion issues in the paint layers.
