Dimensions: Various
Materials: Marble
Adopted By: The Florida Chapter
The pieces in this Section IX were not in a good state of preservation, and the restorer in charge of the work detected different types of damage.
All surfaces were covered by incoherent, coherent, and partially adhering to the stone surface deposits. In addition, calcareous concretions, residues of altered impurities used in previous interventions, inadequate grout, and mortars overlapping the carved surface were visible. The cleaning of the surface, carried out after a few tests, was performed using methodologies and products with less environmental impact and in compliance with the artwork, the restorer, and the environment. Agar-agar gel was used to remove coherent deposits, greasy dust, and various type of overlying substances.
In some phases, the restorer cleaned the surfaces with laser technology ensuring minimal invasiveness and a high level of control.
The restoration of each artifact has been completed, where necessary, filling the gaps using colored marble powders of different grain sizes, similar to the original, and lime putty.
