Bronze Bust

Artist: Unknown

Date: Last quarter of the I century

Classification: Statue

Materials: Bronze

Adopted By: The California Chapter

Total Cost: 16,500

Description

Bronze statues from the classical era are few and rare finds contrary to the abundance of metal works, which, between the classical era and the Renaissance, were sometimes melted down, and the metal was reused to make new objects.   This statue, of which only the upper part exits, depicts the portrait of an eminent yet unknown character of the Augustinian era, who had chosen to be represented in “heroic nudity” with his cloak hanging from his shoulder.

State of Preservation

The surface of the statue had an uneven glaze and was affected by various processes of corrosion, altering its look and preservation. On the inside of the statue was an old support system, which presented an advanced state of deterioration.

Restoration Procedures

  • Cleaning the surface to bring the statue to its original look and consistency
  • Stabilizing and removal of the corrosive products
  • Replacement of internal support structure
