On May 16, 2025, the newly reimagined display of the Vatican Museums’ collection of Minute Mosaics will be unveiled within the Gallerie della Biblioteca, in the historic Paolina Hall II.
This renewed, permanent exhibition offers a chance to rediscover one of the most captivating expressions of 18th-century decorative arts: the micromosaic.

At the heart of the new layout is the decision to present the works inside the original 18th-century cabinets of the Gallery—furnishings originally designed to safeguard knowledge, now transformed into elegant showcases for the art of intricate detail.
It’s a meaningful curatorial choice, reconnecting micromosaics with their natural setting: a world of private wonder, quiet contemplation, and precious objects meant to be admired up close.

The origins of this delicate art form are closely linked to St. Peter’s Basilica, where, in the late 1500s, the Vatican Mosaic Studio was established with the goal of replacing paintings with more durable mosaic works.
From this tradition, the micromosaic was born: a meticulous technique initially applied to luxury items, which later became a hallmark of the cosmopolitan taste of the Grand Tour era.

The Vatican Museums’ collection—one of the most significant in the world—demonstrates the refinement of an art that transforms tiny enamel tesserae, just millimeters in size, into powerful and delicate visual masterpieces.
The restoration of this exceptional collection has been generously funded by the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, whose continued support has been essential in preserving and promoting the Vatican’s artistic heritage.

Curated by the Decorative Arts Department, the new presentation will be officially inaugurated on May 16, in the presence of Sister Raffaella Petrini, F.S.E., President of the Governorate of Vatican City State; Barbara Jatta, Director of the Vatican Museums; art historian Alvar González-Palacios; and Luca Pesante, Head of the Decorative Arts Department.

The exhibition will open to the public on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
