<h3>Chapter History</h3>

For more than twenty years, I have been a member of the Pennsylvania Patrons. My sister has the privilege of living in that state and, when she and her husband joined the Pennsylvania Patrons on their visit to the Vatican, my husband and I joined them with enthusiasm. A few years ago, Father Mark suggested I create the Belgium chapter. Not all of our Patrons are Belgian, but there are generous expatriates living in Belgium, whose selflessness we have brought to the Vatican Museums.

I love my Church, the Holy Father, the Vatican and the Museums but I also have another reason for my attachment, it is my great admiration for Pope John Paul II. My husband and I had the honour of knowing him. During the last war as a young Pole living in occupied Poland, he and his fellow students were about to be sent as &ldquo;slave labour&rdquo; to Germany.

Our family firm in Krakow managed to bring him and his friends to work in a quarry not far from Krakow. It saved their lives. After 1945, the young Karol Wojtyla entered the seminary.

The rest is history and our Holy Father stayed in touch with us. I feel privileged to work for the Vatican. Our Patrons are very generous and to date we sponsored several restorations: The Wooden Statue of the Virgin Mary, the Anastasis Sarcophagus and the Astarita Vases in the Gregorian Etruscan Museum. We usually travel together and we enjoy each other&rsquo;s company. Our members are not all Catholics but we are all broadminded and we love what we do.

Our mission is to promote, restore, and conserve the artistic patrimony of the collections and buildings of the Vatican Museums. As an interfaith nonprofit organization, patrons are organized into regional chapters that further its members&rsquo; knowledge of these works of art through local events and Vatican Museums activities.

Patrons are dedicated to sustaining one of the oldest and most unconventional museums in the world. Unlike other major museums, the Vatican Museums receives no tax revenue to sponsor the restoration of its treasures, and therefore relies significantly on the generosity of our Patrons.

The Canadian Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums was formed in 1999 as a not-for-profit interfaith group that is committed to the restoration, preservation, and increase in the artistic patrimony of the collections and buildings of the Vatican Museums while furthering the understanding and knowledge of its members of these works of art through lectures, meetings, and visits to the Vatican.

The common misconception is that art is a luxury of the rich. The Holy Father, Pope Francis&rsquo; comment is that &ldquo; No one needs beauty more than the poor. Their life is often surrounded by much suffering and lack of hope. They seek out beauty as a way to lift their spirits. How many people spend their day in Museums, Churches, and Parks? It is not just a practical solution to a safe place to be, but also a beautiful place to rest the soul.&quot;

<h3>Chapter History</h3>

The works displayed in the Vatican Museums cover more than four thousand years of civilization. One can begin with the Egyptians and continue with the Romans and the Renaissance, arriving at contemporary art. Within the museums which occupy much of the Vatican Palace, one can encounter one of the greatest concentrations of masterpieces in the world.

In 1506 Pope Julius II, pursuing the ideals of the Renaissance, began to display his collection of ancient works of art, such as the Laoco&ouml;n and the Apollo of the Belvedere. He invited artists of the time to view them in what was called the Little courtyard of the Belvedere &ndash; what we now know as the Octagonal Courtyard. The collections were increased over the centuries, many of which were gifts presented to the Popes and invaluable items related to the work of the Church. Some of the works, such as those found in the Sistine Chapel and the Rafael Rooms were created for a specific purpose or monument.

The Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, and the New York Chapter, were founded in the early 1980s to help support artistic conservation projects, donate equipment for restoration laboratories, and assist in restructuring the museums. For more than 30 years Patrons from throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe have shown their support and concern through the conservation of the Vatican patrimony of art which stands as the most unique collection in the world.

<h3>Chapter History</h3>

The Vatican Museum Exhibit at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition was Outstanding. It was arranged by the late Walter Persegati (Secretary-General and Treasurer of the Vatican Museums) and the late Fr. Valentine &ldquo;Val&rdquo; Ambrose McInnes, O.P. of New Orleans, who traveled to Rome and the Vatican Museums with many small groups and significant restorations were made through the years prior to the World Exposition. In 1985, The Patrons of the Vatican Museums in the South, Inc. was incorporated by Catholic members of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Alexandria, Louisiana. Fr. Val McInnes, Deacon Paul Nalty (deceased), and his wife Jane Nalty, Joy Nalty Hodges, and St. Denis Villere were some of the incorporating officers. Dr. Rudy Ehrensing&rsquo;s organizational skills have been invaluable. Throughout the years, the Chapter has grown to approximately 51 Patrons and Deacon Nalty&rsquo;s son, Rev. Msgr. Christopher H. Nalty is now the Chaplain and leader of our trips to the Basilica of St. Peter and the Vatican Museums. Msgr. Nalty attended the Pontifical North American College in Rome and is a Certified Guide to the Vatican Necropolis under the Basilica of St. Peter. Msgr. Nalty has been working with Louisiana Patrons since 1994. Louisiana Patrons were present for the unveiling of Michelangelo&rsquo;s &ldquo;Final Judgement&rdquo; after it was cleaned.

Recently, during the November 2017 Rome Pilgrimage with Msgr. Nalty, the Louisiana Chapter had the opportunity to visit the Vatican Restoration Labs and view its recent project, the completed restoration of the inspiring and beloved &ldquo;Bust of Ecce Homo&rdquo;.

The Chapter has participated in restoration projects such as the &ldquo;Pius IX Takes Restoration of the City of Rome, the Lateran Basilica and the Bramante Courtyard&rdquo;. The Louisiana Chapter is grateful for the scholarship and stewardship of Msgr. Christopher Nalty, Dr. Rudy Ehrensing, Dr. Frank Schmidt, Dr. Harold Fuselier, Jr., and John Charbonnet; and the dedicated benefactors past and present who have generously shared their time, their talent, and their love in restoring and preserving the many spiritual masterpieces.

As the next generation of Patrons, plan the future, let us be ever mindful, God&rsquo;s Holy Spirit is at work in the human heart. God&rsquo;s grace has inspired numerous master artists over the centuries to tell stories of the Bible in painting, sculpture, mosaic, stained glass, inspiring structures and other art forms. The Louisiana Chapter is appreciative of the opportunity to collaborate in the preservation of the remarkable &ldquo;visual story&rdquo; of the many extraordinary works within the Vatican art collection.

The Minnesota chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums is an interfaith, non-for-profit organization concerned with the protection, restoration and preservation of human history as it is contained in the great repository of art and artifact in the collections of the Vatican museums.

Since that time, the MN/ND Chapter which has about 50 members has made several exclusive trips to the Vatican and to Rome; organized local educational, artistic and social events, and above all has been able to finance several restoration projects in the Vatican Museums.

<h3>Chapter History</h3>

For centuries, the Vatican Pontiffs have enacted a system of patronage of the arts in order to facilitate the creation of some of the most significant masterpieces in the history of art. One calls to mind Pope Julius II, who employed Michelangelo and Raphael to create the iconic frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and the School of Athens at the height of the Renaissance, the will to support an artistic legacy has always been at the heart of the Vatican&rsquo;s idea for humanity.

Our PAVM Chapters trace their roots to Pope Paul VI and his desire to create a Vatican Collection of inspired Modern art. In 1969, Monsignor Pasquale Macchi, then secretary to Pope Paul VI (Later Archbishop of Loreto) came to the United States to curate such a collection. To assist the Vatican Museums in securing the art that the Vatican Museums&rsquo; curators wished to acquire, a committee was formed in New York City. The key person for this project was Executive Vice President Larry Fleischman, who successfully encouraged artists, art collectors, and foundations to contribute desired works. The work of the Committee in collecting art thinned after fifty-four acquisitions as space was limited in the Museums, but interest was already circulating in art conservation.

These same friends who aided in the acquiring of modern art for the Vatican also undertook the building of the first state-of-the-art marble restoration laboratory in the Vatican Museums. The second project of this committee was to inaugurate a great Vatican art exhibition in the United States. This exhibition happened from 1983-4 in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco, and was a major success. &nbsp;

Following that exhibition, several persons of goodwill and generosity interested not only in modern art but also in the conservation and restoration of older pieces wanted to help the Vatican Museums. To accommodate that work, a California group under the leadership of the Archbishops of San Francisco and Los Angeles was formed. It was Walter Persegati (Vatican), Monsignor Clark (New York), Father Miles Riley (California), and Father William Lion (Chicago) who toward the end of the tour decided that if the Friends of the Vatican Museums had remained dedicated to the Vatican Museums for nearly ten years and continued to do excellent work through generous donors, then there was room for an organization capable of attracting others inspired by the recent Vatican Museums exhibition who were prepared to help in the permanent support of patronage.

In 1983, the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums were formed in California and New York. In the following time, local patron chapters in sixteen states and nine countries were established. Through the generosity of over two thousand donors over a history of more than thirty-five years, the Patrons have accomplished the restoration of some of the most monumental works of art and architecture in the Vatican Museums, most notably the famous frescoes of the Raphael Rooms and the Gallery of the Maps, the Pauline Chapel, the Gallery of the Candelabras, the Vatican Gardens, the Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs, and currently, Bramante&rsquo;s Pinecone Courtyard. &nbsp;In addition to these extensive endeavors, the Patrons have also restored hundreds of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Modern paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and decorative arts. We support over 70% of the budget of the six different restoration laboratories in the Vatican Museums and apply our efforts and resources to all artistic aspects of the Holy See, such as the frescoes in the vaults of the Holy Stairs sanctuary, or the archaeological site unearthed beneath the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls.

In 2018 our chapter leaders from around the globe met with Pope Francis for a private audience in honor of our organization&rsquo;s thirty-fifth anniversary. Acknowledging the significant contributions the Patrons had made in this period in restoration and conservation, the Holy Father said: &ldquo;Your generosity over these years has contributed to the restoration of numerous art treasures held in the Vatican Museums. In this way you have continued a centuries-long tradition, imitating the achievements of those who contributed to the Church&rsquo;s history through art. These works include the frescoes and sarcophagi in the catacombs, the great Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, and the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini and Canova...In today&rsquo;s troubled world, unfortunately so often torn and damaged by selfishness and the thirst for power, art represents, perhaps even more than in the past, a universal need because it is a source of harmony and peace.&rdquo; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Patrons of the Arts are passionate about the arts&rsquo; ability to inspire, elevate, and reveal the human spirit. Our mission is to promote, restore, and conserve the artistic patrimony of the collections and buildings of the Vatican Museums. As an interfaith nonprofit organization, patrons are organized into regional chapters that further their members&rsquo; knowledge of these works of art through local events and Vatican Museums activities.

Patrons are dedicated to sustaining one of the oldest and most unconventional museums in the world. Unlike other major museums, the Vatican Museums receive&nbsp;no tax revenue from sponsoring the restoration of its treasures and therefore rely&nbsp;significantly on the generosity of our Patrons.

The Patrons enable the Vatican Museums to:

	<li>Convey the cultural, spiritual, and historic patrimony of the Vatican Museums;&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Improve, enrich, and expand the Vatican Museum&rsquo;s facilities and collections.</li>

The annual membership fee is a&nbsp;tax-deductible donation&nbsp;used for restoration work, conservation projects, equipment for restoration laboratories, capital improvements, and the acquisition of art.
