An exhibition on three Crivelli paintings restored thanks to the generosity of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, commemorating 35 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Holy See.

PAINTINGS ON SHOW:

  • Pietà - Sponsored by the California Chapter
  • The Polyptych of the Madonna with Child and Saints - Sponsored by the California Chapter
  • The Madonna and Child - Sponsored by the New England Chapter

The year of 2019 marks thirty-five years of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the United States of America. To commemorate this anniversary, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Callista Gingrich and Director of the Vatican Museums Dr. Barbara Jatta collaborated to open an exhibition on the restorations of Vatican Museums’ three works of the fifteenth century Italian Renaissance master Carlo Crivelli, all of which have been sponsored through the generosity of our Patrons.

The exhibition, entitled Crivelli’s Gold, features the newly-restored panel paintings of the  five-section polyptych of the Madonna with the Child and Saints sponsored by the Ahmanson family, the Madonna with the Child sponsored by the New England Chapter, and the splendid lunette of the Pietà sponsored by the Kiley family of the previous Oregon Chapter, now part of California.

During the exhibition opening on the evening of November 13th, over two hundred people gathered to hear Ambassador Gingrich, Dr. Jatta, Patron’s International Director Fr. Kevin Lixey, and exhibition curator Guido Cornini speak on the significant impact of American patronage on the restoration of art in the Vatican Museums, as well as the discoveries made during the restoration of the Crivelli works on view. Several patrons from the New England, Italian and International, and United Kingdom Chapters attended the exhibition opening as well.

The Patrons of the Arts is honored to have received the opportunity of our first exhibition in the Vatican Museums composed entirely of Patron-restored works. We hope that many of our patrons will have the opportunity to see this exhibition, which runs until January 2020. The Patrons would also like to reiterate their gratitude to the Ahmanson Family and to our California and New England Chapters for their generosity in facilitating the recovery these artworks.
